Why I Wrote a Handbook About Getting Rid of Head Lice

As a first-time parent, there were things I didn't know about raising kids. The good stuff included not knowing how much I would enjoy parenthood. But there was other stuff, of course. I didn't know that my newborn would hate riding in the car. I didn't know that I would feel differently about spiders in the house. And I didn't know how many communicable diseases there were until I sent my child to preschool. I'd forgotten that catching each others' bugs is a big part of our lives when we're growing up. And sometimes, the bugs we catch really are bugs.

When my four-year-old daughter caught head lice at school, I didn't even really know what lice were. I knew they were insects that made your head itch. Luckily, I was able to spend a generous amount of time educating myself so that we could rid ourselves of the problem in just over 24 hours. Not every parent is so lucky. There are parents who can't afford to miss days or weeks of work to deal with lice or hire someone to do the work it takes to eradicate them. And I was sorry to learn that, in their desperation, there are parents who have unintentionally harmed or killed their children trying to treat them for head lice. I wanted to play a part in ending those days for good. There are families who are beside themselves dealing with recurrence after recurrence of head lice, which takes a financial and emotional toll on everyone. Often resigning themselves to thinking that the problem is unbeatable, they give up, which in turn allows the problem to spread like wildfire in the community. I'd like to see those days end, too.

I learned during my research that eradicating a head lice infestation requires taking a series of deliberate, carefully completed steps that physically remove them from the host and environment. Followed correctly, these simple, ordered steps--using inexpensive household supplies--are the most effective and safe means possible, and can usually be carried out within the span of about one day. But I could find no published list of these steps or the household supplies. I could find no set of instructions, and I could find no expert in my area. So, I figured them out for myself and wrote them down in case someone else at my daughter's preschool needed them. Now you can use them too.
